A part of the city was built upon the ancient city of Aternum. In
1990, following a number of excavations, remains of the Roman and
medieval city came to light, stratified on various levels. The famous
poet Gabriele D`Annunzio was born in Pescara.
One can still see the typical wooden houses which were the old fishermen
houses. The city is today modern and dynami, with its excellent
shops, cafés and ice-cream parlours, and has become significant
